The Kootenay was born out of two things.

 First of all, the mountains of Canada and Kootenay national park, where our founders had enjoyed many invigorating ascents up the mountain and grown to appreciate the value of a suitable carabiner.

Because the designer has climbed the mountain in Kootenay, only the shape is inspired by the peak of Kootenay.

The second one was

"how do you carry your everyday carry?"

We all have our everyday carry, those tools we need every day. A powerful torch, a multi-tool, and a wind-resistant lighter. But where do you carry them? In your pockets where they can tumble out? A bulky pouch? Or do you wear a particular pair of cargo pants with extra pockets?
